The Happy Hour Tea Shop
Paul and Debby are both 3rd generation Door County innkeepers. Paul’s grandparents Hubert & Jenny Woerfel operated a small Bed & Breakfast the Happy Hour Tea Shop on this same site from the 1920’s until 1960 when they retired, continuing to live in the house for several years until they passed away, leaving the property to Paul’s parents.
Paul’s parents owned and operated the Dun-Rovin Cottages in Fish Creek, and Debbie’s parents owned and operated the Sleepy Hollow Motel in Sister Bay. Debby’s grandparents had run the Sister Bay Bowl in the 1940’s, and built the Woodland Motel in Ephraim.
After Hubert and Jenny’s death Paul’s parents rented out the old Tea Shop as a private residence until Paul & Debby bought the property from them and moved in on June 14th, 1975.
The Homestead Motel
Paul and Debby lived in the house while working nearby as schoolteachers until in 1982 they built the 18-room Homestead Motel next door, connected to the original Tea Shop B&B which served both as motel office and home to their growing family.
Paul and Debby’s children grew up watching them checking people in and out, and helping with cleaning and doing laundry. Returning guests got to know both Paul and Debby and their children over the years, becoming almost an extended family.
Since then the Homestead has grown to 50 rooms and luxury suites, and the name has been updated to the Homestead Suites. Both Paul and Debby feel they are blessed to have spent the last 35 years as innkeepers here, raising a family and living in beautiful Door County.
Thank you for staying with us! We hope you enjoy your visit to Door County and will come back to see us again and again!
