Known as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” Door County is worthy of a spot on anyone’s holiday itinerary to Wisconsin. Door County is home to quaint villages, beautiful beaches, unique restaurants, incredible state parks, picturesque wineries, and more. But of course, it is difficult to explore the county without a plan.
Luckily for you, we have put together a list of must-visit places you can include in your itinerary:
1. Peninsula State Park
Peninsula State Park is one of the biggest state parks in entire Wisconsin. It has over 468 campsites, a summer theater, a beach, an 18-hole golf course, lighthouses, bike trails, and more. It is a perfect vacation spot for families, groups, and even solo travelers.
And if you stay in one of the hotel rooms in our Door County bed and breakfast, you can easily bike or hike in the park from your hotel door as our place is a gateway to Peninsula State Park!
2. Door Bluff Headlands Park
If you want to explore the northern end of the Door County Peninsula, Door Bluff Headlands Park is the place you shouldn’t miss. The Door Bluff is known for its unique topography, as well as shoreline and vegetation that are mostly untouched. The only developed area in this park is the road that leads to one of the park’s edges that offer an incredible view of Green Bay. Hiking in the hilly terrain of this park can be challenging, but if you have a sense of adventure, the overlooking view is worth the hike.
3. Schoolhouse Beach
Schoolhouse Beach is in a protected cove along Washington Island, which is seven miles northeast of the tip of Door County Peninsula. You may need to take a ferry ride, but the journey to this unique beach is worth the trip. The shore is covered in millions of small, smooth stones — a perfect beach for those who don’t like getting sand in their shoes. During the summer, the water in the cove is crystal clear. Also, the town park is in a beautiful wooded setting where you can have a great picnic.
4. Stone’s Throw Winery
Door County is home to many beautiful wineries, so don’t forget to stop by at one. Stone’s Throw Winery, for instance, is only several minutes away from our bed and breakfast. You can check out this place to have a taste of its elegant selection of wines.
5. Alexander’s Restaurant
Alexander’s Restaurant is one of the popular dining spots in Fish Creek — and you shouldn’t miss it when you’re in Door County. This place features delectable seafood dishes, hand-cut steaks, and original creations that are made with only the finest ingredients. Whether you’re with family or a special someone, dine in Alexander’s to have a taste of what Door County’s food culture has to offer.
